How to make a geography video

What the Geography type is

Geography is a Ginvid video type with its own look: it is always drawn in the Motion look, which adds 1 credit per started minute, with stock footage of each place. The script opens with a short question or a striking fact, then takes the places one at a time, in the order a viewer finds them on a map, with the real causes: climate, rivers, mountains, soil, distance and history.

What to write

  • A question a map answers: "Why is most of Western Australia empty?" or "Why does the Nile flow north?".
  • A named place, region or natural feature, rather than a whole continent.
  • Optional: the angle you want, or places to include.

What Ginvid does

It searches the web first, which costs about 1 credit, writes only what the sources say and lists the sources with the video. For every scene it plans a map and draws it on boundaries from Natural Earth's public-domain map data, with relief, rivers and towns, marking each place as the narrator names it. Each scene also gets real stock footage of the place, or an AI picture when no footage fits. The result is a vertical Short of up to 3 minutes or a 16:9 video.

Steps

  • Open the Video page and choose Geography.
  • Ask your question in one line.
  • Read the script and the sources it lists, and change any words.
  • See the price and press Make.

Limits

  • A disputed border, name or status is not presented as settled, but maps simplify. Read how a contested place is described before you publish.
  • Place names are said as an atlas gives them; check the pronunciation of unusual names in the finished video.
  • A very small place may lack the map detail a large one has.

Try it

Opens the Video page with the Geography type and a question filled in. Plans from $39 a month.

QUESTIONS

Questions

How are the maps made?

For each scene Ginvid plans a map and draws it in the Motion look on real boundaries from Natural Earth, with relief, rivers and towns. Each place is marked as the narrator names it.

Is the footage real?

Yes, stock footage of the place, with an AI picture only when no footage fits.

Where do the facts come from?

Ginvid searches the web before it writes, writes only what the sources say and lists them with the video. You can still change every word.

What does it cost?

A video costs 1 credit per started 100 seconds, plus 1 credit per started minute for the Motion look and about 1 credit for the web search. The exact price is shown before you make it.
